SUMMARY:Lecture Series: Fred Johnson (in for Ed Gordon) – The Other Nuremberg: The Tokyo War Crimes Trial (1946-1948)
DESCRIPTION:Due to unforeseen circumstances\, Ed Gordon will no longer be able to speak at the presentation on the Tokyo War Crimes Trial. However\, we are pleased to share that Fred Johnson has graciously agreed to step in and present on the topic\, with Ed’s assistance. Tuesday’s (7/16) event remains as scheduled. \nFred Johnson was already scheduled for his own presentation on the Seabees on August 6\, and that presentation will also remain on the schedule. \n\n\nThe Other Nuremberg: The Tokyo War Crimes Trial (1946-1948) \nDuring World War II political and military leaders of the Empire of Japan committed major war crimes and crimes against humanity. Over 6 million civilians and prisoners of war were killed by the Japanese. Three percent of Allied soldiers died in German and Italian prison of war camps; 27.1 percent of captured Allies died in Japanese prisons or while used as slave laborers. \nThis record of brutality led to the convening of the International Military Tribunal of the Far East or the Tokyo War Crimes Tribunal in May 1946. Representatives of eleven Allied nations participated in this trial which lasted until November 1948. Twenty-eight men were tried—nineteen military officers and nine political leaders\, four of whom former prime ministers including General Hideki Tojo who held that post during most of World War II. \n  \nBiography of Edward E. Gordon \nEdward E. Gordon is an internationally known historian\, speaker\, researcher\, and author. He taught history at DePaul University\, Chicago and was a distinguished lecturer for the Organization of American Historians for 10 years. He has presented hundreds of historical programs to museums\, libraries\, universities\, and a wide variety of other organizations across the United States. \nEd Gordon is also the president and founder of Imperial Consulting Corporation. He is the author of 20 books and over 150 articles in the areas of history\, business\, and education. His latest book\, Divided on D-Day: How Leadership Failures Threatened the Normandy Invasion\, co-authored with David Ramsay\, was published by Prometheus Books. \nHe has appeared on the CBS network’s “The Early Show\,” CNN\, the PBS News Hour\, National Public Radio\, and many other media venues. \nDr. Gordon earned his B.A. and M.A. degrees in history at DePaul University\, his Ph.D. at Loyola University Chicago\, and pursued post-graduate studies at the University of Chicago.
