SUMMARY:Lecture Series: Fred Johnson—The Fighting Seabees
DESCRIPTION:Fred Johnson—The Fighting Seabees \nOver 12\,500 African Americans served in Seabee units in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters during World War II\, a group largely forgotten today. During the war these men not only built advanced bases and offloaded cargo\, but helped break institutional conceptions of race\, paving the road toward complete integration of the Navy. \nJohnson joined the Hope faculty in the fall of 2000. His primary field is 19th century U.S. history\, specifically the Civil War. His other areas of study include the U.S. in the 20th century\, the U.S. military\, foreign policy and African history. He is an award-winning public speaker\, a member of Toastmasters International and the National Speakers Association. He has advanced to the semifinal rounds of the Toastmasters World Series of Public Speaking competition eight times\, placing him among the 100 best speakers in the global organization\, taking second place in 2017 and 2018.

DESCRIPTION:This lecture is SOLD OUT \nAlex Kershaw—Patton’s Prayer: A True Story of Courage\, Faith and Victory in WWII.  \nGeneral George Patton needed a miracle. In December 1944\, the Allies found themselves stuck. Rain had plagued the troops daily since September\, turning roads into rivers of muck\, slowing trucks and tanks to a crawl. A thick ceiling of clouds had grounded American warplanes\, allowing the Germans to reinforce. The sprint to Berlin had become a muddy\, bloody stalemate\, costing thousands of American lives. \nPatton seethed\, desperate for some change\, any change\, in the weather. A devout Christian\, he telephoned his head chaplain. “Do you have a good prayer for the weather?” he asked. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Stephen Brecher – Penicillin\, a Football Game\, and the Golden age of Antibiotics in WWII \nLearn about the secret weapon developed in WWII. This miracle drug is credited with saving the lives of 10 to 15 % of all WWII Casualties. Research and production of penicillin became the second highest priority of the war effort in 1943. \nA Story About Penicillin\, A Football Game\, A Fire\, World War II and Antibiotic Resistance\nAlthough penicillin was discovered in England\, the war there prohibited its production so the effort to produce it moved to the United States in 1941. The Cocoanut Grove fire in 1942 (“The Fire that made Penicillin Famous”) played a significant role in the way our government perceived its importance\, which initiated tireless efforts to mass produce penicillin for our soldiers in WW II especially for the D-Day invasion. Penicillin made a huge difference in the outcome of the war. \nDr. Stephen M. Brecher recently retired as the Director of Clinical and Molecular Microbiology at the Boston Veterans Affairs Medical Center after 39 years. He is an Associate Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine.
