SUMMARY:Lecture Series: Linda Matchett - The American WWII Home Front in 29 Objects
DESCRIPTION:Linda Matchett – The American Home Front in 29 Objects \nUnlike its European allies during World War II\, the American mainland escaped physical devastation\, as it was not subjected to full-scale invasions. However\, that didn’t mean the United States wasn’t impacted by the war. The ramifications of large economic\, cultural\, and societal changes forced Americans to reconsider entrenched beliefs and traditions. Artifacts collected from across the nation tell the stories of the American people whose lives were shaped by the second “war to end all wars.” \nLinda Shenton Matchett writes about ordinary people who did extraordinary things in days gone by. A native of Baltimore\, Maryland\, she was born a stone’s throw from Fort McHenry (of Star-Spangled Banner fame) and has lived in historical places all her life. She is a volunteer docent and archivist at the Wright Museum of WWII and a former trustee for the Wolfeboro Public Library.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Edward Gordon – Fireball in the Night: The Fire-Bombing of Japan and the Atomic Bomb Controversy \n\n\nOn April 18\, 1942\, Lieutenant-Colonel James H. Doolittle led a clandestine bombing raid of sixteen B-24 Mitchell bombers that flew from U.S. aircraft carrier Hornet to Tokyo\, a distance of more than 650 miles. SUMMARY:Lecture Series: Robert O'Connor - The Jeep Show
DESCRIPTION:Robert O’Connor – The Jeep Show \n\n\nIn late 1944 the American military was advancing through Western Europe so fast that entertainment units could not keep up with them. Major Joshua Logan\, then an officer in Special Services\, noted that the advancing G.I.s were “never in one place long enough to see a show”. He was credited with coming up with the idea of small quick moving entertainment units to entertain at rapid notice called “jeep shows”. \nThe small troupe usually comprised a comedian\, dancer/singer and musician. They traveled in a jeep with their musical instruments and other equipment carried in a quarter ton trailer that would be converted into a stage. \nBefore Victory in Europe Day the jeep shows played before 23\,749 troops in eighty-one performances. \nRooney recalled his first show being between two Sherman tanks three miles from the front in Belgium for 60 soldiers. Rooney’s troupe sometimes put on seven shows a day and covered 150\,000 miles in a year. Before Victory in Europe Day the jeep shows played before 23\,749 troops in eighty-one performances

SUMMARY:Lecture Series: Col. Edna W. Cummings (Retired) - 6888th\, Central Postal Directory Battalion
DESCRIPTION:Edna W. Cummings – 6888th\, Central Postal Directory Battalion \n\n\nThe U.S. Army’s 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion was the only all-minority\, all-female Women’s Army Corps (WAC) unit to serve overseas during World War II. The primary mission of the “Six Triple Eight\,” as the unit was popularly known\, was to sort the two- to three-year backlog of undelivered mail for U.S. service members in the European theater of war. The unit\, organized on March 4\, 1945 in Birmingham\, England\, contained about 850 officers and enlisted personnel who formed four companies. Whereas most Black units in the military contained white officers\, every position in the 6888th was staffed by Black women. \nColonel Edna W. Cummings\, U.S. Army (Retired) Six Triple Eight Advocate\, Author\, and Congressional Gold Medal Champion \nRetired Army Colonel Edna W. Cummings is a true example of a social entrepreneur and change-maker. Her career path can be described with three words: service\, leadership\, and change. Col. Cummings was the first African American woman to receive a commission as an Army Officer from Appalachian State University in her home state of North Carolina. Afterwards\, she served in key positions in the U.S. Army\, and held leadership positions in multi-million dollar businesses\, worked on national initiatives\, and was able to bring recognition to the all-Black WWII Women’s Army Corps unit\, Six Triple Eight. Col. Cummings championed the legislative effort to enact passage of the Six Triple Eight Congressional Gold Medal Act of 2021\, signed by the President in March 2022. This is the nation’s highest civilian honor. Cummings\, has been recognized as a national leader by bipartisan elected officials\, and diverse social and business organizations.

SUMMARY:Lecture Series: David S. Foglesong - From Allies to Enemies: Truman\, Stalin and the Start of the Cold War
DESCRIPTION:David S. Foglesong – From Allies to Enemies: Truman\, Stalin and the Start of the Cold War \n\n\nIn April 1945\, not long after Harry Truman succeeded Franklin Roosevelt as President\, US\, British\, and Soviet troops met at the Elbe River and celebrated their impending victory over Nazi Germany. Two years later\, just a month after Truman announced his doctrine for support of free peoples against outside pressures or internal subversion\, financier and political advisor Bernard Baruch declared that the United States was in the midst of a “cold war\,” with enemies “abroad and at home.” This lecture will analyze and explain the drastic deterioration of US-Soviet relations from the culmination of the wartime alliance to the first use of the term “cold war” in the United States. It will emphasize the influence of US domestic politics and the major changes in American public opinion about the Soviet Union during those two tumultuous years. \nDr. Fogelson is a historian of American Foreign Relations and Professor of History at Rutgers University Most of my research has focused on American Soviet and American-Russian relations.

DESCRIPTION:Elyse Graham – Book and Dagger – How Scholars and Librarians became the unlikely Spies of WWII \n\n\nElyse Graham will discuss the untold story of the academics who became OSS spies\, invented modern spycraft\, and helped turn the tide of the war. \nAt the start of WWII\, the U.S. found itself in desperate need of an intelligence agency. The Office of Strategic Services (OSS)\, a precursor to today’s CIA\, was quickly formed—and\, in an effort to fill its ranks with experts\, the OSS turned to academia for recruits. Suddenly\, literature professors\, librarians\, and historians were training to perform undercover operations and investigative work—and these surprising spies would go on to profoundly shape both the course of the war and our cultural institutions with their efforts. \nElyse Graham is an American writer and historian\, author of 4 books and teaches at Stony Brook University.

SUMMARY:Lecture Series: David Barnhill and Stephen Rueff - Spies and Space
DESCRIPTION:David Barnhill and Stephen Rueff- Spies and Space  \n\n\nDavid Barnhill and Stephen Yogi Rueff are creators of the Spies and Space\, which will be shown at the museum this summer. Their discussion will highlight the years after WWII from 1947 to 1991\, when the United States and the Soviet Union were dubbed “superpowers”. As each country vied for dominance\, the innovations and scientific advancement became enticements for illicit espionage activity. Both the US and the USSR sought to demonstrate their supremacy by initiating a race to outer space\, conducting covert espionage and building up immense nuclear arsenals. This discussion will focus on how the real world drama and intrigue of the international espionage\, and the fascination with outer space seeped into American and Soviet popular culture during the Cold War. \nStephen Yogi Rueff grew up in Minneapolis collecting comic books in the 1960s and loves his role as co-founder of SuperMonster市City!\, where he is a curator and managing director. Stephen has worked in the arts as a performer\, designer\, manager\, and producer\, touring around the globe with performing artists such as MacArthur Genius Award Recipients Meredith Monk and Bill T. Jones\, as well as Blue Man Group\, Karen Finley\, and many\, many other artists and creatives. \nAs an Account Manager and Executive Producer for global corporate communications companies Jack Morton Worldwide and BI Worldwide\, he produced events throughout the United States\, France\, Germany\, Belgium\, Spain\, Austria\, Czech Republic\, and Bahrain. \nStephen enjoys his role as ‘Faculty Advisor/Lead for the Minor in Creative Entrepreneurship’ at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). His academic research in Arts Entrepreneurship explores ways to redefine business practices that can preserve culture and maintain artistic integrity\, while being more restorative\, regenerative and equitable to all stakeholders. \nStephen’s curatorial research centers on the fictional monsters\, superheroes and their creators in American popular culture; the ubiquitous impulse to collect; and how to reveal intimate and personal memories that are embedded into pop culture objects. \nStephen earned his MBA with an emphasis in Leadership and Sustainable Business from Presidio Graduate School. Stephen’s BA from Empire State University\, the same college attended by Peter Parker\, aka Spider-Man! ‘Nuff said. \nDavid Barnhill has been collecting since the early 1960s. David’s parents felt that anything that inspired him to read and stimulated his imagination was a good thing. As David’s interest in film\, literature\, and comic books evolved\, his parents allowed him to pursue his passion for monsters\, villains\, superheroes\, and the fantastic. \nDavid continued collecting while traveling the world – visiting every continent except Antarctica. David felt it was his mission to buy the scariest and most vicious toys he could find. Inspired by the High Lama in the 1930s film The Lost Horizon\, David’s vision was that “in some future time\, there will be a need for these amazing toys\, spacemen and villains for all to enjoy.” \nDavid’s collection now includes more than 200\,000 items\, making this Minnesota-based collection one of the largest private toy collections in America.  Containing rare and highly sought-after items representing toymakers and monster creators from across the United States and several foreign countries\, David co-founded SuperMonster市 City! because he is eager to share his joy in toys\, monsters\, superheroes\, and villains with the world.

SUMMARY:Lecture Series: David Chrisinger - The Soldiers Truth: Ernie Pyle and the Story of WWII
DESCRIPTION:(This event was originally scheduled for September 10) \nDavid Chrisinger – The Soldiers Truth: Ernie Pyle and the Story of WWII \nA beautiful reckoning with the life and work of the legendary journalist Ernie Pyle\, who gave World War II a human face for millions of Americans even as he wrestled with his own demons. \nAt the height of his fame and influence during World War II\, Ernie Pyle’s nationally syndicated dispatches from combat zones shaped America’s understanding of what the war felt like to ordinary soldiers\, as no writer’s work had before or has since. From North Africa to Sicily\, from the beaches of Anzio to the beaches of Normandy\, and on to the war in the Pacific\, where he would meet his end\, Ernie Pyle had a genius for connecting with his beloved dogfaced grunts. A humble man\, himself plagued by melancholy and tortured by marriage to a partner whose mental health struggles were much more acute than his own\, Pyle was in touch with suffering in a way that left an indelible mark on his readers. While never defeatist\, his stories left no doubt as to the heavy weight of the burden soldiers carried. He wrote about post-traumatic stress long before that was a diagnosis. \nDavid is the author of The Soldier’s Truth: Ernie Pyle and the Story of World War II\, which chronicles the life of renowned war correspondent Ernie Pyle and Stories Are What Save Us\, a profoundly moving book that weaves together David’s journey as a writer\, editor\, and teacher with a wide range of craft tools and storytelling frameworks and structures he and his students have used to process trauma and conflicts in their own lives to create beautiful stories of growth and transformation. David is also a Logan Nonfiction Fellow and has contributed columns to the New York Times Magazine. He also regularly contributes to The War Horse\, an award-winning nonprofit newsroom dedicated to educating the public on military service\, war\, and its impact. In addition to his work as an author\, David serves as the Executive Director of the Harris Writing Workshop\, leads the Persuasive Writing Credential Program\, and advises the student-led Chicago Policy Review at the University of Chicago’s Harris School of Public Policy. \n \n

SUMMARY:Lecture Series: Dr. Stephen Brecher – Penicillin\, a Football Game\, and the Golden age of Antibiotics in WWII
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Stephen Brecher – Penicillin\, a Football Game\, and the Golden age of Antibiotics in WWII \nLearn about the secret weapon developed in WWII. This miracle drug is credited with saving the lives of 10 to 15 % of all WWII Casualties. Research and production of penicillin became the second highest priority of the war effort in 1943. \nA Story About Penicillin\, A Football Game\, A Fire\, World War II and Antibiotic Resistance\nAlthough penicillin was discovered in England\, the war there prohibited its production so the effort to produce it moved to the United States in 1941. The Cocoanut Grove fire in 1942 (“The Fire that made Penicillin Famous”) played a significant role in the way our government perceived its importance\, which initiated tireless efforts to mass produce penicillin for our soldiers in WW II especially for the D-Day invasion. Penicillin made a huge difference in the outcome of the war. \nDr. Stephen M. Brecher recently retired as the Director of Clinical and Molecular Microbiology at the Boston Veterans Affairs Medical Center after 39 years. He is an Associate Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine.

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT - Lecture Series: Alex Kershaw—Patton's Prayer: A True Story of Courage\, Faith and Victory in WWII.
DESCRIPTION:This lecture is SOLD OUT \nAlex Kershaw—Patton’s Prayer: A True Story of Courage\, Faith and Victory in WWII. \nGeneral George Patton needed a miracle. In December 1944\, the Allies found themselves stuck. Rain had plagued the troops daily since September\, turning roads into rivers of muck\, slowing trucks and tanks to a crawl. A thick ceiling of clouds had grounded American warplanes\, allowing the Germans to reinforce. The sprint to Berlin had become a muddy\, bloody stalemate\, costing thousands of American lives. \nPatton seethed\, desperate for some change\, any change\, in the weather. A devout Christian\, he telephoned his head chaplain. “Do you have a good prayer for the weather?” he asked. The resulting prayer was soon printed and distributed to the 250\,000 men under Patton’s command. “Pray when driving\,” the men were told. “Pray when fighting. Pray alone. Pray with others. Pray by night and pray by day. Pray for the cessation of immoderate rains\, for good weather for Battle. . . . Pray for victory. . . . Pray for Peace.” \nEducated at Oxford University\, Alex Kershaw is the widely-acclaimed\, prize-winning\, New York Times best-selling author of twelve books.
