Reflecting on a Remarkable Year at the Wright Museum of World War II

As we look back on the past year, the Wright Museum of World War II has had the honor of hosting some truly extraordinary exhibits that not only commemorate pivotal moments in history but also engage and educate visitors of all ages. This year marked the 30th anniversary of the Wright Museum, and we could not be more thrilled to have reached this milestone.

Here are just a few of the incredible experiences we offered in our 2024 season.

A Journey Through “D-Day: Freedom from Above”

The “D-Day: Freedom from Above” exhibit was a standout experience, immersing visitors in the harrowing and heroic moments of Operation Overlord. Utilizing augmented reality technology, this interactive exhibit invited guests to step into the shoes of those who participated in the monumental Allied invasion.

Armed with HistoPad tablets, visitors traversed a series of 360-degree, 3D recreations that transported them from a briefing room in England to the chaotic skies during paratrooper jumps and ultimately to the liberation of Sainte-Mère-Église. Each AR experience was meticulously validated by a scientific committee, ensuring that every detail was rooted in rigorous historical research.

Beyond the virtual experiences, attendees had the unique opportunity to inspect actual vehicles and artifacts used during the invasion, deepening their connection to the past. The blend of physical objects and digital technology captivated both history buffs and casual visitors alike, making it a memorable highlight of the museum’s offerings.

Celebrating Women in the Navy

In addition to our D-Day exhibit, the museum proudly showcased a traveling exhibition dedicated to the remarkable contributions of women in the U.S. Navy. This collection highlighted the diverse roles women have played in the Navy throughout the 20th and into the 21st century, from yeoman (F) in World War I to aviators and admirals.

As international and domestic events unfolded, the Navy expanded opportunities for women, demonstrating a progressive shift in military service. The exhibit not only illustrated the varied occupations women have held but also showcased their resilience and determination to create new possibilities for future generations.

A Year of Engagement and Learning

The Wright Museum of World War II remains committed to educating our community about the pivotal events of the past and the individuals who shaped history. As this year’s exhibits sparked meaningful conversations, encouraged exploration, and fostered a deeper understanding of the sacrifices made for freedom, we also hosted a dynamic lecture series.

From stories about D-Day to how love letters from the home front engaged those on the front lines, to even the role of antibiotics in World War II, this series delivered thoughtful, touching, and awe-inspiring presentations to each visitor.

How to Stay Involved in the Offseason

With the Wright Museum closing for the season on October 31, 2024, we hope you will plan to visit us when we reopen in 2025. In the meantime, follow us on Facebook and Instagram to stay in the know.

As the holiday season approaches, it is never too early to start your shopping—especially for someone who already has everything. This year, why not treat them to a gift membership to the Wright Museum? This membership will allow them to immerse themselves in history throughout the season, including reduced admission fees to our lecture series and discounts at the museum store.

Additionally, the Buy a Brick program at the Wright Museum is a great way to honor or memorialize a loved one. For $150, a bronze plaque bearing your message will be installed in our Remembrance Garden. Orders must be placed by March 30, 2025 to be installed in May of 2025.

As we reflect on a year filled with learning and inspiration, we look forward to continuing our mission of honoring the past and engaging visitors in thoughtful dialogue about history’s enduring impact. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or a casual learner, we invite you to join us in celebrating these incredible stories and experiences at the Wright Museum of World War II. Here’s to another year of exploration, discovery, and remembrance!
