Wright Museum of World War II to Participate in Albacore Park’s Navy History Day

Albacore Park, 600 Market Street, a National Historic Landmark Site and Museum in Portsmouth, New Hampshire announces its annual Navy History Day on Saturday, September 15, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Navy History Day was inaugurated in 1922 by the Navy League of the United States and over the years, has come to honor all branches of service within the Department of the Navy.  Its historical origins go back to Theodore Roosevelt as much of his life was devoted to establishing a sound naval policy for the United States of America.  Executive Director, Patricia Violette says, “Originally held in October of each year, Navy History Day provides a valuable means for fostering a better understanding of the Navy and its work. Navy History Day has developed into a day of honor and celebration of one our nation’s oldest military protectors. In addition, we are honoring the USS New Hampshire currently in dry-dock at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.”

This year’s theme is ‘Search and Rescue – Submarine Rescue.’  Albacore Park will have author discussions and book signings with D. Allan Kerr, Michael Mitchell, Frank Hood and Denise Brown; Sea Shanties performed by the Mudhook Trio; children’s face painting with Trading Faces, and food and beverages for your enjoyment.  You will meet many representatives from organizations such as The Wright Museum of WWII, the Friends of Albacore, USS Constitution Museum, Kittery Historical and Naval Museum, and Portsmouth Historic Sites Associates.  There will also be Sea Perch remote control sub demonstrations, toy submarine races and so much more.  “Join us for a day of historic fun!” said Violette, “We also intend to feature some unannounced surprises that you won’t want to miss!”

Admission for this special event will include FREE admission for all active duty and immediate families, all veterans and their immediate families are FREE, and all others will enjoy ½ priced admission.

Albacore Park, the formal site for the USS Albacore Submarine and museum and home of the Portsmouth Submarine Memorial Association, provides a sprawling park for everyone’s enjoyment.  Daily tours of the submarine run from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Albacore Park is one of Portsmouth’s historical gems and all are welcome!  For more information please call 603-436-3680 or visit their Facebook page.
